Kenneth Ef. Sands MD, MPH

Kenneth E. Sands, MD, MPH, is an Associate Professor of Medicine at Harvard Medical School and the Senior Vice President for Health Care Quality at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center (BIDMC) and a member of the Division of General Medicine. Dr. Sands is a graduate of Dartmouth Medical School and holds a Master’s degree in Public Health from Harvard School of Public Health. In his capacity as Senior Vice President, Dr. Sands oversees hospital functions relating to patient safety, risk management, patient relations, performance measurement, infection control, radiation safety, emergency management, pharmacy operations, occupational health, and medical staff affairs. Dr. Sands’ specific expertise in infection control has led to numerous publications on the development of practical methods for monitoring hospital infection using automated datasets. Dr. Sands was one of the founders of a curriculum on quality improvement which began as a research pilot, and that is now a core requirement for all residents in the Department of Medicine, fully integrated into the residency training program. Currently funded research include: initiatives to develop a leadership curriculum for mid-career physicians; initiatives to define preventability of hospital-acquired injury, and investigating best practices for disclosure to patients regarding error.
