Jessica van Loben Sels joined the Guinea Worm Eradication Program in June 2024. Her scientific career includes conducting research on immunological responses to HSV-1 and norovirus infections, designing and deploying novel diagnostic platforms in a Vietnam field study, identifying and characterizing antibodies with therapeutic potential, supporting the NIH COVID-19 Task Force as an epidemiologist and data manager, and building public health laboratory infrastructure in resource-challenged settings, including the U.S. Virgin Islands as part of the CDC Laboratory Leadership Service.
Sels earned a Bachelor of Science in microbiology from the University of Kansas, a Master of Public Health in epidemiology from George Washington University, and a doctorate in pathology from the University of Cambridge as an NIH Oxford-Cambridge Scholar.
