Hans-Joachim Anders was born in 1967 and attended medical school at the Universities of Göttingen and Würzburg. He performed his MD thes is in experimental cardiology with Georg Ertl in Wurzburg. He received is clinical training at the University of Munich were he joined the group of Detlef Schlondorff who encouraged him to join the fields of clinical and experimental nephrology. HJ Anders is a board-certified internist (2001), nephrologist (2002), and rheumatologist (2005) with an interest in clinical immunology and renal inflammation. He is currently vice chair of the Department of Nephrology at the University of Munich and responsible for the Renal Division at the inner city campus and runs a lupus clinic. In 2003 is gained Ph.D-like lecturer status (habilitation) on his experimental works about the role of chemokines and chemokine receptors in kidney disease.
His intern ational research group continues to work on the role of innate im munity and how it regulates physiological and aberrant healing responses in kidney diseases. His group has publis hed more than 165 articles on this topic. He was awarded in the year 2009 with the Franz-Volhard Award by the German Society of Nephrology.
