Gary L. Schwartz, MD, is a Professor of Medicine and Consultant in the Division of Nephrology & Hypertension, Department of Internal Medicine at Mayo Clinic Rochester.

Dr. Schwartz, a native of Wabeno, Wisconsin, graduated from the University of Wisconsin at Madison with a BS degree in Biochemistry in 1973. After receiving his MD degree from the University of Wisconsin, he completed a residency in Internal Medicine in 1980 and a fellowship in Nephrology in 1982 at the Mayo Graduate School of Medicine. He was appointed to the Mayo Clinic faculty in 1982. From 1996-2004, he served as Chair of the Division of Hypertension at Mayo Clinic.

Dr. Schwartz’s research interest has focused on the identification of genetic factors influencing the etiology of hypertension, variation in antihypertensive drug responses, and variation in susceptibility to complications of hypertension. In addition, recent interests have focused on low-renin hypertension, an important subset of essential hypertension, and renal denervation as a treatment for resistant hypertension. He has authored or co-authored more than 150 peer-reviewed publications and abstracts. He has been a scientific reviewer for 34 indexed scientific journals and serves on the Editorial Board of the American Heart Association journal Hypertension. He is currently a member of the Board of Directors of the American Society of Hypertension Specialists Program in Clinical Hypertension. Dr. Schwartz is a fellow of the American College of Physicians, the American Heart Association, the American Society of Hypertension, and the American Society of Nephrology. In 2011 he received the Henry S. Plummer Distinguished Physician Award, the Mayo Clinic Department of Medicine’s highest recognition.
