He remained an active member of the organization, being Vice Chairman from 1999-2002.

In 2005, Dr. Hughes was the medical editor of ‘A Simple Guide to Type 2 Diabetes’ (CSF medical communications). In February 2006, he was involved in a working group for the Austrian Ministry of Health (as part of Austria’s EU Presidency), the conclusions of which have formed part of the ‘Declaration of Vienna.’ In 2007, he contributed a chapter on the microvascular disease to ‘Diabetes – a handbook for the primary healthcare team’ (McDowell, Matthews and Brown, Elsevier Ltd).
