Prof. Dr. Edwin R. van den Heuvel started a PhD in mathematical statistics at the University of Amsterdam and he continued his career at the same university as consultant and researcher in industrial statistics. He then changed his career and became departmental head of a group of statisticians in the pharmaceutical industry. In 2008, he returned to the university as honorary professor in statistics for life sciences at the University of Groningen, and he is currently full time professor in medical statistics at the University Medical Center Groningen. He has been a member of the Dutch Statistical Society (VVS) and he is also registered as biostatistician at this society.

His applied statistical research initially focused on variance components models for small data sets with emphasizes on industrial, chemical, biological, and sensory measurement reliability (e.g. development, validation, control, and stability). He believes that highly reliable test methods are essential to determine precise and accurate subject matter knowledge. This type of research has been extended towards linear, non-linear and generalized linear mixed models for the analysis of experimental, cross-sectional, and longitudinal data. More specifically, focus is given to meta-analysis and harmonization, life course epidemiology, missing data, model selection, goodness-of-fit, variance components estimation, and confidence intervals. Other research topics of interest are experimental design and equivalence testing.
