Dr. Bers is an internationally renowned leader in cardiovascular research, particularly molecular-cellular and animal studies aimed at understanding regulation of the normal heartbeat and how things go wrong in pathophysiological states like heart failure and arrhythmias. He has a highly productive track record of >450 published papers (>200 in last ten years) mostly in high impact journals (e.g. >90 in Circ Res/Circ alone), that are highly cited (>40,000 times; h-index=107). He has received numerous national and international research awards, held leadership positions in numerous scientific societies, editorial boards and grant review panels. He has been continuous funded as Principal Investigator for >35 years by multiple NIH grants. He has trained >75 Ph.D. students, postdocs and junior faculty, most of which have gone on to very successful careers. He has established an extensive network of collaborations with labs throughout the U.S. and internationally, and has been an effective leader of large multi-institution research groups and has been a Chair of Biomedical Sciences, Physiology and Pharmacology departments.
