Bruce A. Bartoo, CFRE, is senior vice president & chief philanthropy officer for MedStar Health. In this role, Bartoo is responsible for coordinating and implementing systemwide philanthropy initiatives, to increase philanthropic support for MedStar Health programs. He provides oversight and management of all philanthropic initiatives across the system, and continually works to streamline system fundraising efforts in support of the MedStar Health Strategic Plan.
Prior to joining MedStar Health, Bartoo served Sisters of Mercy Health System as the chief philanthropy officer and president of the Mercy Health Foundation for four years where he was the top philanthropy professional for the 21-hospital system. He has a long and diverse set of experiences in the world of philanthropy, including his role as executive director of Foundations with ProMedica Health System, vice president of Development for GBMC Healthcare and a fundraising and marketing consultant. Bartoo began his career as a political campaign executive and fundraiser, and later worked in Development at Westminster College in Pennsylvania and Drake University in Iowa.
A certified fund raising executive, Bartoo also holds a Master of Public Administration from Drake University and a Bachelor of Arts in political science from Westminster College. He received additional development training at the College of William and Mary's Robert F. Sharpe Planned Giving Institute, Aspen Academy for Institutional Development, Williamsburg Development Institute, and the Campaign Management College.
Bartoo recently served on the Association for Healthcare Philanthropy Board of Directors as the regional director, where he coordinated program activities for the Midwest region. He was the former president-elect of the northwest Ohio chapter and a founding board member of the northwest Pennsylvania chapter of the Association of Fundraising Professionals. He also held chapter board positions with the American Red Cross and the American Cancer Society. Bartoo is a regular presenter and speaker at the Association for Healthcare Philanthropy, Association for Fundraising Professionals and the Council for Advancement and Support of Education conferences.
