Dr. Savani’s area of specialization is in the treatment of hematological malignancies and stem cell transplantation, and his primary field of research is in the long-term follow-up (late effects) of stem cell transplantation recipients, including immune reconstitution and late organ dysfunction after transplantation, regimen-related toxicity/supportive care, and outcomes analysis of transplant recipients. He has published over 100 peer-reviewed articles, reviews, editorials, perspectives and commentaries in the field of hematological malignancies and stem cell transplantation.
Dr. Savani is a Co-Editor of the journal Bone Marrow Transplantation (the official journal of the European Group for Blood and Marrow Transplantation- EBMT) and serves as an editorial advisory board member for several journals including Biology of Blood and Marrow Transplantation (the official journal of the American Society of Blood and Marrow Transplantation. He is currently Co-Chair of the steering committee on clinical practice guidelines and former vice-chair of the committee on evidence-based reviews for the American Society of Blood and Marrow Transplantation. He is also Co-Chair for the Late Effects & Quality of Life Working Committee (LEWC) of the Center for International Blood and Marrow Transplant Research (CIBMTR).
He is an active Member of Acute and Chronic Leukemia and GVHD Committee at the Center for International Bone Marrow Transplantation Research (CIBMTR), where he also serves as a Medical Monitor for the Blood and Marrow Transplant (BMT) Clinical Trials Network (CTN) protocols. He has recently edited a special education issue on late effects after transplantation for Seminars in Hematology (January 2012) and is currently editing a book titled " Blood and Marrow Transplantation Long Term Management: Prevention and Complications". He has served as a Foundation for the Accreditation of Cellular Therapy (FACT) lead inspector since 2011.
