Dr. Antje Ullrich, Ph.D. is a Research Scientist in the Department for Prevention Research and Social Medicine at the University of Greifswald. She Studies Psychology at the University of Bern. Her research focuses on the influence of physical inactivity and sedentary behavior on health. Numerous studies have shown an association between prolonged, uninterrupted periods of sitting time and the development of non-communicable diseases such as diabetes, cardiovascular diseases, or cancer. Reduced energy expenditure or low muscle activity while sitting may be at play, but also certain activities related to sedentary behavior. These include, for example, an unchanged sitting position for a long period of time when working on the computer or eating a bag of chips and drinking a glass of wine while lying on the sofa. In her research, she is working on better methods to capture sedentary behavior and on the question of which preventive measures can be used to counteract the negative effects of physical inactivity and sedentary behavior. In the course of this, it is important that the measures developed to reach the “right” individuals are presented in an understandable manner.
