Anita Bemis-Dougherty, PT, DPT, MAS, received her doctor of physical therapy degree from Widener University in Pennsylvania. She earned a Bachelor of Science degree in physical therapy at The University of Maryland, Baltimore, and a masters degree in administration from the Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore. Bemis-Dougherty is a Lead Clinical Practice Specialist in the American Physical Therapy Association (APTA) Department of Clinical Practice. Before joining APTA in 2006, she was the physical therapy manager at the Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, Maryland. Bemis-Dougherty also has practiced in tertiary, academic medical institutions, which included a variety of clinical settings such as outpatient, acute care, and acute inpatient rehabilitation. She has been involved in APTA initiatives related to physical therapy documentation, peer review, fall risk reduction and prevention, The Joint Commission, acute care initiatives, physical therapists practice in the Emergency Department, revisions to the Guide to Physical Therapist Practice, and education of members in the application of the International Classification of Functioning, Disability, and Health (ICF).
