Prof. Galal earned his bachelor's and master's degrees in Chemistry from Cairo University and master's and Ph.D. from the University of Cincinnati, OH, USA. He joined the chemistry department of Cairo University as an assistant professor in 1992 where he is currently a full professor. Professor Galal worked at several universities where he assumed Professor Visit ships including Ulm, Erlangen, Ilmenau, and Free University (Germany); Cincinnati and Texas A&M (USA); Liverpool (UK); Polytechnic of Turin (Italy); the United Arab Emirates and Kuwait. Professor Galal served as a member of Strategic Planning and Technical Support Center, a member of the Board of Research, Development and Innovation Program, a Program funded by the European Union of the Ministry of Higher Education of Egypt.

Professor Galal also served as Dean of Faculty of Science, Cairo University and as Interim Head of Center of Hazardous and Environmental Mitigation of the University. Professor Galal earned several honors: Graduate Fellowship Award, Quantum Chemical Corporation (USA), Fellowship Award of the Alexander von Humboldt Stiftung, He also acts as a member of the National Committee on New and Advanced Materials, the committee of Basic Sciences, of the Academy of Science and Technology of Egypt. Professor Galal was the Egyptian delegate to International Science Technology and Innovation Center for South-south Cooperation under the Auspices of UNESCO, (Malaysia); The inauguration of the Euro-Mediterranean University (EMUNI) (Slovenia); The Center for Science and Technology of the Non-Aligned and Other Developing Countries (NAM S&T), Cochin – (India); The Russian Forum (Russia); COMEST meeting on Ethics of Science and Technology under the auspices of UNESCO (Qatar); COMEST meeting on Ethics of Science and Technology under the auspices of UNESCO (Qatar).

Professor Galal is a member of the Advisory Board for the International Institute for Multifunctional Materials for Energy Conversion (IIMEC), Texas A&M University (USA). Professor Galal earned Cairo University Prize in Excellence in Research in the area of Advanced Materials for Technological Applications. He authored and co-authored over 140 published and presented papers in international journals and conferences. He supervised several theses that led to both Masters's and Ph.D. degrees. His research covers a wide spectrum of interests including surface tailoring with nanostructured materials for energy conversion, storage, and sensing applications. Synthesis and modification of carbon-based nanostructures with emphasis on graphene and carbon nanotubes, and perovskites. Another area of research interest is corrosion prevention and control using smart coating and studies of newly developed super-alloys for advanced applications.
