Medical Mission Overview: An Orientation to International Aide Work is organized by University of Minnesota and will be held during Mar 11 - 17, 2018 at Floating Doctors, Bocas del Toro, Panama. The target audience for this medical event is experienced and inexperienced medical practitioners primarily from internal medicine, emergency medicine, family practice, pediatrics and obstetrics/gynecology who have a desire to effectively participate in providing quality healthcare in the remote setting, especially in tropical areas. This CME Conference has been approved for a maximum of 34.5 AMA PRA Category 1 Credits. Course Description: This interactive course is designed to combine hands-on training alongside the experienced Floating Doctors staff with classroom didactics lead by an international staff of highly trained and experienced physicians. There will be a total of four days of classroom discussions, reviewing perspectives on best practices for remote care diagnostics and treatments, five hours of hands-on portable ultrasound techniques, and two days of hands-on training in remote clinics with the Floating Doctors. Topics: • Cultural Competency • Running a Successful Clinical Deployment • Medico-Legal Aspects of Mission Work • Ultrasound • Maternal Health • Births in Remote Settings • Pediatrics • Infectious Disease • Parasites • Gastrointestinal Disease • Cardiology • Surgery in Limited-Resource Settings Workshops : • Two days of remote clinic deployment where the learner receives the highest quality instruction from experienced staff to ensure the retention of knowledge • Ultrasound techniques for remote obstetrics, gastrointestinal, and cardiology diagnostics • Hands-on practical planning session with the Floating Doctors staff for a future remote medical clinic Conference Objectives are : • Plan and organize your own medical mission. • Diagnose conditions using portable ultrasound. • Identify and treat common presentations in remote settings without hospital support. • Diagnose and treat conditions outside your specialty in remote settings.
