Description:
The Belgian Society of Toxicology and Ecotoxicology, abbreviated as BelTox, was founded in 1988 and its statutes published in the Official Journal of Belgium in June 1989. The Steering Committee of the Society is comprised of professionals active as toxicologists in different sectors of society such as academia, authorities, scientific institutions, contract organizations, consulting and industry. The main objective of BelTox is to establish contacts between scientists in all fields of toxicology and ecotoxicology in Belgium, facilitate the exchange of knowledge and encourage research initiatives and collaboration. BelTox is a member of the European Society of Toxicology (EUROTOX), an umbrella organization for national toxicology societies. In 2001, the scope of the Society was broadened to include ecotoxicology.

Mission:
It is the objective of BelTox to improve the practices in hazard and risk assessment of chemicals in Belgium by promoting the regular exchange of science among students and professionals from scientific institutions, academia, authorities, industry, consulting companies and contract research organisations in the fields of toxicology and ecotoxicology.

The scope of its activities includes the study of potential adverse effects to health and the environment of a large variety of natural and man-made substances.

These substances include environmental pollutants, industrial chemicals, pesticides, biocides, food contaminants, food additives, cosmetics, human and veterinary medicines, natural toxins and genetically modified organisms. BelTox was officially established in June 1989 and is member of the European Societies of Toxicology (EUROTOX).
