The primary goals of the ÖSG are the improvement and optimization of pain medicine care and pain medicine training as well as the promotion of pain research. In addition, there are .

• Patient-oriented goals:
In order to improve the care situation for pain patients, the ÖSG advocates the establishment of comprehensive, graded care facilities according to defined quality and structural criteria as well as the establishment of acute pain services in hospitals. Another important project is the mapping of pain medical care structures and criteria for the resident, outpatient and inpatient area in the Austrian health structure plan.

• Training-oriented goals:
Well-founded training and further education are essential prerequisites for optimal pain medical care. The ÖSG therefore endeavors to integrate pain medicine as an interdisciplinary subject in university human medicine studies based on an international model. In addition, the ÖSG is also committed to offering demand-oriented advanced training in line with the current state of science (pain diploma courses) and to developing care concepts and treatment algorithms in consensus with other specialist societies.

• Science-oriented goals:
Pain research provides important insights into the development of pain, pain processing and pain perception. The Austrian Pain Society awards science prizes annually to promote basic and health care research in pain medicine.
