Objectives:
• Review ADA guidelines and scientific evidence about when self-monitoring of blood glucose (SMBG) is appropriate for diabetic patients treated with insulin therapy and especially for those also treated with oral agents.
• Instruct patients on oral medications on desired frequency and timing of tests in order to guide medicine titration.
• Counsel patients with type 2 diabetes about the importance of weight loss - but not necessarily excessive loss.
• Emphasize the importance of regular exercise in achieving weight loss.
