Informed Consent, Decision Aids, and Shared Decision Making is organized by Massachusetts Medical Society (MMS) and will be held during Oct 16, 2017 - Oct 16, 2020. This CME Conference has been approved for a maximum of 1.00 AMA PRA Category 1 Credit.
Course Overview :
Health care providers need to make sure that their patients understand fully the scope of their medical intervention. Often, patients blindly sign any form placed in front of them, and do not fully comprehend the risks, resulting in competence and performance gaps, between what they believe their Provider will do for them and what may actually occur. This course covers the importance of giving the patient as much information possible, so that the patient may take an active part in the decision of their health care treatment, and thereby, accept some of the responsibility for its outcome.
Learning Objectives :
• Describe the underlying policies behind requiring informed consent
• Discuss the new types of legal claims being brought against physicians related to informed consent
• Contrast the effectiveness of traditional informed consent forms to newly created decision aids
• Explain the process in which a physician can participate in shared decision making with a patient
