Description:
The constantly evolving science around optimal pediatric nutrition is the focus of the annual Advances in Neonatal and Pediatric Nutrition conference, accredited and hosted by the University of California San Diego, School of Medicine. This continuing medical education (CME) activity provides clinicians with a concise overview and important take-home messages of selected presentations from the 2019 Conference, which brought together key investigators and educators to break down the latest science of relevance to pediatric practitioners. This report aims to improve clinicians’ knowledge, competence, and performance related to management of allergy (as well as nonimmune-mediated food sensitivities); implications of preterm growth patterns for long-term developmental and metabolic outcomes; progress in intestinal rehabilitation in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU); human milk science and selecting the optimal infant formula in preterm as well as full-term babies; the evidence for an anti-inflammatory diet in inflammatory bowel disease; and the latest evidence regarding pre- and probiotics.
Educational Objectives
At the conclusion of this activity, participants should be better able to:
• Discuss the importance of early and sustaining nutrition on the development and progression of conditions such as metabolic syndrome, obesity, • celiac disease, cystic fibrosis, inflammatory bowel disease, allergy, and autoimmunity
• Describe the strategies to improve nutrition for the preterm baby to optimize both short- and long-term health outcomes, especially those that improve neurodevelopmental outcomes
• Identify current advances and practices in perinatal, neonatal, and pediatric nutrition, including new parenteral and enteral products and their roles in nutrition practice
