Description:
Following the standards for competency established by the American Physical Therapy Association (APTA) related to conducting a screening examination, “Differential Diagnosis for Physical Therapists” gives you a consistent way to screen for systemic diseases and medical conditions that can mimic neuromuscular and musculoskeletal problems. This comprehensive text centers on a 5-step screening model that covers past medical history, risk factor assessment, clinical presentation, associated signs and symptoms, and review of symptoms for each client.

Course Goals:
This course is intended to instruct the professional through a self-paced study on the screening for hemotologic, cardiovascular and pulmonary diseases.

Objectives:
At the conclusion of this course, the participant will be able to:
• Identify clinical signs and symptoms of polycythemia.
• Identify clinical signs and symptoms of sickle cell anemia.
• Recognize and differentiate between clinical signs and symptoms of acute hemarthrosis, muscle hemorrhage, and gastrointestinal involvement.
• Identify cardiovascular signs and symptoms by 7 systems.
• Identify clinical signs and symptoms of statin-induced side effects.
• Recognize risk factors for CAD.
• Differentiate between different types of anginal pain including chronic stable angina, resting angina, unstable angina, nocturnal angina and atypical angina.
• Identify and differentiate between clinical signs and symptoms of heartburn, angina pectoris, myocardial infarction, and myocardial ischemia in women.
• Recognize characteristics of cardiac chest pain for angina, myocardial infarct, mitral valve prolapse and pericarditis.
• Identify and differentiate between clinical signs and symptoms of pericarditis, left-sided heart failure and right-sided heart failure.
• Recognize clinical signs and symptoms of aneurysms and ruptured aneurysms.

• Recognize clinical signs and symptoms of asthma, pneumonia, tuberculosis, systemic sclerosis lung disease, and lung cancer.
• List clinical signs and symptoms of cystic fibrosis and pulmonary involvement in cystic fibrosis.
• Recognize clinical signs and symptoms of DVT’s, PE’s, Cor Pulmonale, pleurisy, and pneumothorax.
• Differentiate between neuromusculoskeletal and systemic signs and symptoms of endocrine dysfunction.
• Recognize and differentiate between clinical signs and symptoms of diabetes insipidus, inappropriate secretion of antidiuretic hormone, and acromegaly.
• Recognize and differentiate between clinical signs and symptoms of Cushing’s syndrome and adrenal insufficiency.
