Description:
Following the standards for competency established by the American Physical Therapy Association (APTA) related to conducting a screening examination, “Differential Diagnosis for Physical Therapists” gives you a consistent way to screen for systemic diseases and medical conditions that can mimic neuromuscular and musculoskeletal problems. This comprehensive text centers on a 5-step screening model that covers past medical history, risk factor assessment, clinical presentation, associated signs and symptoms, and review of symptoms for each client.

Course Goals:
This course is intended to instruct the professional through a self-paced study on the screening of buttocks, hip, groin, thigh, leg, chest, breast, ribs, shoulder and upper extremity.

Professional Objectives:
At the conclusion of this course, the participant will be able to:
• Differentiate between systemic and neuromusculoskeletal causes of buttock pain, hip pain, groin pain and anterior thigh pain.
• Differentiate between symptoms of vascular claudication, neurogenic claudication, peripheral neuropathy, and restless leg syndrome.
• Recognize clinical signs and symptoms of a stress reaction and stress fracture.
• Identify discogenic and nondiscogenic causes of sciatica.
• Identify musculoskeletal or neuromuscular and systemically induced risk factors for sciatica.
• Identify clinical signs and symptoms of sciatica/sciatic radiculopathy and sciatic neuropathy.
• Recognize 6 causes of psoas abscesses.
• Recognize clinical signs and symptoms of psoas abscesses.
• Differentiate between clinical signs and symptoms of osteonecrosis and hip hemarthrosis.
• Differentiate between systemic and neuromusculoskeletal causes of chest pain.
• Identify clinical signs and symptoms of cardiac arrest.
• Recognize clinical signs and symptoms of gastrointestinal disorders.
• List clinical signs and symptoms of breast pathology.

• Recognize clinical signs and symptoms of metastasized breast cancer and anabolic steroid use.
• Differentiate between systemic and musculoskeletal causes of rib pain.

• Identify 8 risk factors for TB.
• Recognize systemic causes of shoulder pain.
• Recognize associated signs and symptoms of shoulder pain
Identify clinical signs and symptoms and three stages of CRPS.
• Differentiate between bacterial endocarditis, pericarditis and aortic aneurysms.
• Recognize how to screen for pulmonary and cardiac causes of shoulder pain.
• Identify infectious causes of shoulder pain including osteomyelitis and mononucleosis.
• Recognize how to screen for gastrointestinal, liver and biliary causes of shoulder pain.
• Differentiate between oncologic causes of shoulder pain including primary bone neoplasms, pulmonary neoplasms, Pancoast’s tumors, and breast cancer.
• Identify 5 risk factors for an ectopic pregnancy.
