Overview:
The opioid epidemic has long taken its toll in the US with more than 564,000 deaths due to overdose from 1999 - 2020. With the opioid epidemic continuing to plague the US, this CME activity discusses up-to-date CDC opioid prescribing guidelines for healthcare professionals covering opioid initiation, continuation, dosing, titration, discontinuation, risk reduction strategies while touching on the history and relevance of the opioid crisis and the importance of controlled substance reporting systems.  

Educational Objectives:
After completing this activity, the participant should be better able to:
1. Discuss the opioid crisis history and prescribing trends within the United States
2. Identify appropriate opioid prescribing practices based upon the CDC guidelines for prescribing opioids for chronic pain including opioid initiation, continuation, dosage, titration and discontinuation.
