Bulimia nervosa is a relatively common eating disorder in Western society. This eating disorder is defined by criteria from the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, fifth edition, as lack of control over eating, eating more than most would eat at a given time, and recurrent/inappropriate methods used to prevent weight gain. Recurrent episodes of binge eating are associated with emotional distress, depression, mental anguish and a sense of loss of control, and the need to get rid of the excess calories consumed during eating binges. The compensatory behavior to get rid of the excess calories may involve abusing laxatives, self-induced vomiting, intense exercise that is joyless, abuse of diuretics, use of appetite suppressant or use of medications to speed up metabolism. Treatments include cognitive behavioral psychotherapy as well as antidepressants; however, relapse is common.
