American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons (AAOS) Osteoarthritis (OA) Knee: RM Review is organized by Physicians Insurance A Mutual Company and will be held during Oct 09, 2013 - May 30, 2020.
The target audience for this medical event is Orthopedists. All other interested healthcare practitioners are also welcome to participate. This CME Conference has been approved for a maximum of 1 CME credit.
In April 2013, the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgery (AAOS) issued revised guidelines on the treatment of osteoarthritis (OA) of the knee. This monograph will provide a brief summary of the new AAOS recommendations and supporting evidence, woven with a risk management perspective on clinical practice guidelines. Are they the standard of care? Are they cookbook medicine? What is the likelihood that following them will improve patient outcomes? From a risk management standpoint, it is recommended that orthopedists be familiar with the guidelines of their specialty society, and that these guidelines be neither dismissed out of hand nor embraced uncritically. We will suggest ways for orthopedists to weigh the strength of the evidence and treatment recommendations so they may take them into account in their clinical decision making.
Conference Objectives are:
• Differentiate clinical practice guidelines from cookbook medicine, hospital performance measures, payer requirements, and the standard of care.
• Describe how the AAOS rates evidence and how it relates the strength of evidence to their treatment recommendations.
• State sources for locating orthopedic guidelines and a resource for judging the integrity of guidelines.
• Factor in guidelines with other considerations in arriving at a treatment decision.
Additional details will be posted as soon as they are available.
