Over 24 M Americans suffer from autoimmune disease and the prevalence is rising. Researchers have identified 80-100 different autoimmune diseases and autoimmunity is the number 2 cause of chronic illness in the US. The term Leaky Gut Syndrome is used to describe the condition of “Hyperpermeable Intestines,” a term that means the intestinal lining has became more porous and no longer functions properly. The result of this change in permeability status of the gut is now being explored in its relationship to diseases such as autoimmune disease, neurodegenerative changes, and gastrointestinal disorders. The nutritional management of autoimmune diseases usually emphasizes controlling pain and inflammation, slowing the progression of the disease, and boosting the immune system. Today, a few promising diets, select foods and nutrients are emerging as potentially beneficial. This seminar explores the research linking autoimmune disease, leaky gut and autoimmune diet protocols. Intermediate level.

• Define leaky gut syndrome and its role in systemic inflammation.
• Identify the connection between leaky gut and autoimmune disease.
• Explore the role of diet in preventing and treating autoimmune disease (e.g. Autoimmune diet protocol, Paleo diet, FODMAP diet, GAPS diet, etc).
• Identify nutrition strategies that could help normalize intestinal permeability and reduce inflammation.
• Explore the relationship between gluten and autoimmune diseases (e.g Hashimoto’s thyroiditis, celiac disesae, rheumatoid arthritis, etc.).
• State the role of leaky gut and the gut microbiota in Immune-Mediated Inflammatory Diseases (e.g. inflammatory bowel disease, lupus, multiple sclerosis, type 1 diabetes, rheumatoid arthritis, etc.).
• Identify the role of vitamin D in autoimmunity and immunity.
List key autoimmune diet protocols in the treatment/prevention of autoimmune disease.
• Explore evidence-based research on the use of dietary supplements in select autoimmune diseases (e.g. probiotics, vitamin B-12, folic acid, etc.).

Additional details will be posted as soon as they are available.
