Activity Overview:
This course discusses how families of children and adolescents with Lyme disease experience the illness in order to develop practical solutions that fill the gaps in care.
Learning Objectives:
At the conclusion of this continuing education activity, the participant will be able to:
• Recognize how parents and families of children and adolescents with Lyme disease are affected by their family member’s illness
• Identify the four stages in which families report needing greater attention and more satisfactory treatment
• Understand why doctors are reluctant or otherwise unable to provide parents what they would find satisfactory treatment and care for their children with Lyme disease
• Describe the difficulties and controversies surrounding Lyme disease testing, diagnosis, and treatment
• Define and classify the extensive symptoms and stages of Lyme disease
• Empathize and engage with doctors, patients and parents alike in a unified effort to overcome the struggles and obstacles of Lyme disease treatment and care to seek more satisfactory and effective care and treatment for children with the illness
• Empower parents and doctors to pursue more efficient and effective methods of testing and treatment for children with Lyme disease
• Define and describe patient-centered and family-centered healthcare practices
• Assess and analyze alternative guidelines and best practices for diagnostic testing and treatment methods and family-centered medical-care practices that improve families’ experiences of living with Lyme disease
• Identify and evaluate extraneous and mitigating factors that could influence both the diagnosis, treatment, and care of a child with Lyme disease and the affected child’s, parents’ and whole families’ experiences of dealing with the illness
