TOPIC 1: Critical Care Literature… What You NEED to Know!

Upon completion of this session, the participant should be able to:
• Appraise key articles from the recent critical care and emergency medicine literature.
• Plan the integration of recent evidence into the practice of emergency medicine.

TOPIC 2: Update on the Management of Stroke and Transient Ischemic Attack

Upon completion of this session, the participant should be able to:
• Assess common presentations of cerebrovascular insufficiency.
• Prescribe the initial management of patients with a suspected acute CVA.
• Apply cutting edge strategies and therapies for the management of hemorrhagic and thrombotic strokes.
• Distinguish between stroke and TIA and appropriately assess the patient with TIA for early risk of stroke.
• Formulate an effective post-stroke secondary prevention plan as per the AHA/ASA guidelines.

TOPIC 3: Critical Care Quickies

Upon completion of this session, the participant should be able to:
• Appraise the use of vasopressor medications through a peripheral intravenous line.
• Determine the optimal ventilator settings for intubated emergency department patients.
• Employ “pearls” in the use of ultrasound for placement of central venous lines and arterial lines.
• Utilize interventions that have been shown in randomized controlled trials to benefit critically ill patients.
