Course Description:
Varicella is caused by primary infection from human herpesvirus type 3. Following primary infection, which often occurs in childhood, the virus remains dormant in neurosensory ganglia. It may be reactivated, typically years or decades later, resulting in the cutaneous disease commonly known as shingles or herpes zoster. This course provides a review and updates on herpes zoster infection with an emphasis on herpes zoster ophthalmicus that can cause devastating and irreversible vision loss.

• Employ effective management of herpes zoster ophthalmicus
• Identify potential therapy for post herpetic neuralgia
• Recognize the signs and symptoms of herpes zoster
• Differentiate herpes zoster ophthalmicus from other ocular manifestations
