Conference Summary

2021 NYU Langone Health Annual Psychopharmacology Review is organized by NYU Grossman School of Medicine. This online CME course will be held on Mar 06, 2021.

Credit Designation Statement:

The NYU Grossman School of Medicine assigns this enduring online activity for a maximum of 7.5 AMA PRA Category 1 Credits™. Physicians will be able to earn the credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity.

Course Description:
The pharmacological treatment of mental disorders continues to develop as distinct drugs emerge and as advanced knowledge develops of the risks and benefits of existing therapies. The challenge facing clinicians treating patients with psychiatric disorders is how to employ medications most effectively while balancing potential risks. This task is complicated by frequent FDA safety warnings and studies reporting previously unrecognized side effects linked to several medications. This annual, one-day course is intended to present expert perspectives on issues of major public health concerns such as bipolar disorder, major depression, treatment and prevention of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), psychiatric issues in the peri-pregnancy period, and treatment of patients with complex psychopharmacologic issues.

Course Objectives:
At the conclusion of this CME activity, clinicians should be able to:
• Build a drug selection strategy to accurately recognize the optimal intervention for patients and develop treatment plans based on published treatment guidelines and emerging research
• Evaluate the potential risks and benefits of antipsychotic augmentation in patients with non-responding depression
• Discover the efficacy in managing dissociative and hallucinogenic agents in the treatment of PTSD
• Explain the relative efficacy of lithium carbonate and distinct generation antipsychotic medications in bipolar disorder
• Identify and prescribe the relevant treatment alternatives for opiate dependence
• Guide the appropriate psychopharmacological agents for complex patients
