Description:
Most clinicians ‘pick up’ ultrasound guidance techniques in clinical work– few are formally taught. This course will give you an understanding of ultrasound guided techniques, machine optimisation including tips and traps, anatomy familiarisation on real volunteers and needling practice on phantoms. Rule out Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm (AAA) is another common chore for the emergency department. For instance, renal colic, biliary colic, pancreatitis, back pain and gut obstruction can all mimic this low risk, high stakes condition. In the shocked patient, transport to CT is a major undertaking. “Rule out AAA” is a time consuming or difficult task unless you have an ultrasound machine. With point of care ultrasound, it becomes the work of a few minutes to risk stratify a patient and safely direct their care. No prior experience is needed for this module. After a machine familiarisation session and sonoanatomy lesson, you will be taught how to acquire a set of scans that adequately rule out a large AAA. Through the day you will practice the skill on harder patients and learn what to do for the more challenging habitus. By the end of the day, you should be able to scan, identify and interpret a set of scans which support your clinical decision. Although acquisition of a diagnostically adequate scan set is the first necessary competency along the path to mastery, it is not expected from you to become an expert in a day. This one-day course is all about learning what you don’t know, what you need to know, and what you need to practice safely.

Content:
• Vascular Access
• Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm

Course Objectives:
At the end of this course the attendees should be able to:
• Identify the parameters of safe application of ultrasound and its limitations in medical diagnosis
• Identify the physical principles, artefacts and the steps for image optimisation while performing ultrasound.
• Practice “hands on” ultrasound scanning skills required to maximise diagnostic ability in answering relevant clinical questions
• Recognise the sonographic appearances of normal and abnormal structures required to answer common clinical questions
• Identify and scan and abdominal aorta in long and transverse
• Identify and scan peripheral and central vessels
• Practice ultrasound guided ultrasound vascular access techniques in phantoms
• Acquire images obtained on normal adult volunteers
• Interpret images from normal adult volunteers
• Recognise the variants and abnormalities from presentations and case-based learning.
• Document the ultrasound findings
