An internist and specialist in bacterial allergy and immunotherapy, he championed the inclusion of allergy studies in the medical curriculum and trained more than 60 UVA allergy fellows over a 30-year period. A chair in his honor, the Oscar Swineford Jr., Professorship in Allergy, was established in 1976.
