NVDS CE PROGRAM - "Understanding Dentistry’s Role in Sleep and Pain" Mayoor Patel, DDS, MS is organized by Northern Virginia Dental Society (NVDS) and will be held on Mar 27, 2020 at Falls Church Marriott Fairview Park, Falls Church, Virginia, United States of America. This program has been approved for a maximum of 6 CEU.
We all know that healthy sleep is vital for our mental and physical well-being.
Dentists play a key role in sleep medicine because we see our patients at least twice a year for their dental checkup. At this appointment we can assess their risk of sleep-disordered breathing. To add to that, though, patients who suffer from sleep-disordered breathing may also experience pain, such as TMD or other craniofacial pain conditions.
About 18 million Americans experience sleep complications caused by chronic pain, while more than 10 million suffer from temporomandibular joint disorder (TMD), a condition that is more common in women than men.
Studies suggest that 50 to 70 percent of chronic pain patients actually suffer from a sleep disturbance. On top of that, 89 percent of patients who actually do seek treatment for their chronic pain also report at least one complaint related to a disturbed sleep and wake cycle.
The most commonly cited ailments associated with pain include sleep apnea, restless leg syndrome and periodic limb movements while sleeping. In fact, sleep apnea is diagnosed in 17 percent of headache patients. This number exceeds population rates.
As dentists, the science and clinical implications of sleep medicine should resonate strongly within each of you. Not only does the physiologic and behavioral state of our patients’ sleep experiences involve a significant part of daily life, but dental sleep medicine is a rapidly evolving area of health care.
After completion of this course you will understand the:
• Role of dentistry and management of sleep apnea.
• Signs and symptoms associated with TMJ disorders.
• Association of sleep disordered breathing and facial pain.
