2020 NYU Langone Health Annual Psychopharmacology Review is organized by New York University (NYU) School of Medicine and will be held on Mar 07, 2020 at NYU Langone Health, New York City, New York, United States of America.

Target Audience:
Psychiatry faculty and trainees, as well as other mental health personnel in the New York area

Course Description:
The pharmacological treatment of mental disorders continues to evolve as new drugs emerge and as improved understanding develops of the risks/benefits of existing therapies. The challenge facing clinicians treating patients with psychiatric disorders is how to use medications most effectively while balancing potential risks. This task is complicated by frequent FDA safety warnings and studies reporting previously unrecognized side effects linked to various medications. This annual, one-day course is designed to provide expert perspectives on issues of major public health concerns such as bipolar disorder, major depression, treatment and prevention of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), psychiatric issues in the peri-pregnancy period, and diagnosis and treatment of patients with complex psychopharmacologic issues.

Educational Objectives:
After participating in this activity, clinicians should be able to:
• Establish a drug selection strategy to correctly identify the optimal intervention for patients and develop treatment plans based on published treatment guidelines an emerging research
• Assess the potential risks and benefits of antipsychotic augmentation in patients with nonresponding depression
• Determine the efficacy in using dissociative and hallucinogenic agents in the treatment of PTSD
• Describe the relative efficacy of lithium carbonate and new generation antipsychotic medications in bipolar disorder
• Recognize and prescribe the appropriate treatment alternatives for opiate dependence
• Prescribe the appropriate psychopharmalogical agents for complex patients
• Prescribe alternatives to antipsychotic medications for psychiatric patients on inpatient medical and surgical services when appropriate
• Referencing guidelines presented at the course, evaluate the geriatric patient for psychiatric conditions
