Nursing Credit:
The University of Kansas Medical Center Area Health Education Center East is approved as a provider of CNE by the Kansas State Board of Nursing. This course offering is approved for 13 contact hours applicable for APRN, RN or LPN relicensure. Kansas State Board of Nursing provider number: LT0056-0749. Mary Beth Warren, MS, RN, Coordinator.

Nursing attendance requirement: Presentations must be attended in their entirety to claim credit. Nurses must attend a minimum of 30 minutes (0.6 contact hours) of this course to receive credit.

Description:
This program is designed to certify people for Hearing Screening Level 1. Day one includes an overview of the Hearing Screening Law and pertinent information in order to allow the participant with the skills to complete hearing screenings and visual inspections and will be able to explain the results. Day two includes a clinical practicum. Participants completing the program will be able to perform Otoscopic inspection, pure tone air conduction sweep screening and threshold screening. Those who complete this program will meet the requirements of Level 1 Certification of the KSA 72-1204 through 1207.

Conference Objectives:
• Explain the purpose and rationale for including tympanometry in the hearing screening protocol.
• Determine measurement parameters used in tympanometry and give a normal range for each.
• Identify symptoms related to various stages of otitis media and consequences.
• Discuss middle ear disorders and current trends in treatment.
• Demonstrate how to do a tympanometry and interpretation of results.
• Demonstrate how to complete different types of hearing screenings.
• Demonstrate interpretation of tympanogram results to determine pass/refer criteria.
• Discuss the benefits of early identification.
• Describe the components of the Infant-Toddler Hearing Screening Protocol including how the components is used in the screening process.
• Identify contributing factors that increase the infant-toddler risk of hearing loss.
• Describe normal auditory development and the use of developmental scales.
• Complete a paper screening for the risk of hearing loss.
• Explain the results of the Infant-Toddler Hearing Screening Protocol.
• Determine need for referral based on paper or hearing screening.
• Record screening results accurately.
• Complete written exam with a score of 80% or higher.
• Demonstrate practical skills with 100% accuracy.
• Explain the results of the Infant-Toddler Hearing Screening Protocol.
