Introductory 2 Day CPD Event on Focal Psychodynamic (FPT) Psychotherapy for Anorexia Nervosa is organized by The British Psychological Society (BPS) and will be held from Nov 13 - 14, 2019 at British Psychological Society, London, England, United Kingdom.
The psychotherapeutic treatment of anorexia nervosa is challenging as patients show a strong fixation to their symptoms and a lack of disease insight combined with a partial disease denial. The workshop will start with a short overview on the scientific evidence for individual outpatient psychotherapy in adult anorexia nervosa patients. In the main part of the workshop the manual of the evidence-based focal psychodynamic psychotherapy will be presented. The starting point for treatment is a detailed initial interview, in accordance with the Operationalised Psychodynamic Diagnosis System (OPD). The three-phase psychodynamic treatment is centred around a specific therapeutic focus derived from the OPD interview. Case vignettes will be used to provide deeper insight into the therapeutic process. The most frequent life-threatening conflicts, dysfunctional relationship patterns as well as structural impairments of anorexia nervosa patients will be discussed. Examples of patient-therapist dialogues as well as of intervention strategies will be used to illustrate the treatment program. Furthermore, strategies are discussed to cope with crises and problems in the course of treatment.
The efficacy of the manualised disorder focused treatment approach presented in the talk was confirmed by the large-scale randomized controlled ANTOP study of outpatient treatments of adult anorexia nervosa patients. The primary outcomes of the ANTOP study as well as secondary research findings will be additionally presented.
