Course Description :
MedStar Georgetown Transplant Institute is proud to be hosting the 2nd Annual MedStar Georgetown Transplant Institute Symposium (MGTI 2019). The educational program will consist of three parallel tracks navigating the diagnosis and treatment options for kidney, pancreas, liver, and intestinal disorders including those requiring a transplant. These tracks include: Advances in Liver Diseases and Transplantation, Current Issues in Kidney and Pancreas Transplantation and Dialysis, and Update on Transplantation for Children. 

Advances in Liver Diseases and Transplantation track will address the gap between best and current practices in order to provide the best care to patients, reduce morbidity and mortality, and reduce the burden of liver disease in the Mid-Atlantic region. Up to date information on liver disease and transplant topics relevant to community practitioners will be highlighted. We will focus special attention on tumors multidisciplinary management of tumors of the hepatobiliary tract as well.Through the Current Issues in Kidney and Pancreas Transplantation and Dialysis track the content will examine kidney and pancreas transplantation with a special emphasis on the multidisciplinary approach in pre and post-transplant care of patients with renal dysfunction and following transplantation. The third track, Update on Transplantation for Children, will focus on topics that will be of interest to pediatric gastroenterology,primary care and allied health providers in the course of their interactions with infants and children with small bowel disease, parenteral nutrition, andchronic liver diseases including those likely to lead to transplantation. MGTI 2019 offers an educational experience for attendees to interact in an interprofessional learning environment with designated tracks, lectures and panel discussions pertaining to your specific specialty.

Course Objectives :
Nurses:

• Recognize older patients who may benefit from transplant
• Evaluate the possibilities for overweight or obese patients to still be successfully transplanted
• Advise patients of options for pregnancy with transplantation vs. dialysis
• Improve recognition of acute and chronic infant and child liver diseases
• Demonstrate appropriate utilization of vaccines in immunocompromised pediatric settings
• Demonstrate various nutritional options inside and outside of the home that are available to delay or prevent onset of malnutrition and its ramifications in infants and children with compromised digestive function and chronic liver diseases

Pharmacists:
• Review the impact of immunosuppression and other transplant medications on the fetus and the chances for successful pregnancy in transplant patients
• Identify the burdens (both physical and mental) placed on patients by the rigorous post-transplant medication regimen
• Improve recognition of acute and chronic infant and child liver diseases
• Demonstrate appropriate utilization of vaccines in immunocompromised pediatric settings
• Demonstrate various nutritional options inside and outside of the home that are available to delay or prevent onset of malnutrition and its ramifications in infants and children with compromised digestive function and chronic liver diseases

Other professionals:
• Appraise the transplant implications of private insurance vs. medicare and medicaid coverage
• Advise and prepare patients on the support needs of transplant patients
• Recognize the possibilities and options for overweight patients in minimizing transplant risks
○ Recognize the pre-transplant conditions that may advantage their patients in receiving transplants
○ Identify the challenges posed by older patients in getting ready for transplant
○ Evaluate the specific factors that differentiate the older patients with better or poorer chances in transplantation
○ Analyze the newer strategies used to overcome even difficult to match patients and allow transplant
○ Differentiate the transplant implications of the choice between private insurance and medicare/medicaid
○ Recognize the warning signs of poor vascular health that may complicate the transplant process
○ Define the challenges, risks, and possibilities for pregnancy in transplant patients with attention to maternal, renal and fetal health
○ Explore the growing role in technology in more effectively communicating and managing complex patients and conditions
