The National Conference on Wilderness Medicine will be held from May 29 - Jun 02, 2019 at Santa Fe Convention Center, Santa Fe, New Mexico

Target Audience: 
Physicians, nurses, physician assistants, and other health care providers who might encounter patients in remote settings or who may treat patients that develop medical problems after visiting remote areas. No outside commercial support has been received for this activity.

Wilderness Medicine Hiking CME Conference
 

Accreditation:
The Center for Emergency Medical Education (CEME) designates this live activity for a maximum of 47.50 AMA PRA Category 1 Credits™ (Main Conference: 24.0, Global Health Symposium: 8.0, AWEP Workshop: 15.5, Wound Management Workshop 2.0). Physicians should claim only the credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity.

This activity is anticipated to offer up to 47.50 hours of AOA Category 2-A CME credit, pending approval by the AOA.

AAFP: This Live activity, National Conference on Wilderness and Travel Medicine - Santa Fe 2019, with a beginning date of 05/29/2019, has been reviewed and is acceptable for up to 47.50 Prescribed credits by the American Academy of Family Physicians. Physicians should claim only the credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity. 

ACEP (Emergency Physicians): This activity is approved for a maximum of 47.50 of ACEP Category 1 credits.

Nurse Credit: Under the new BRN guidelines, this course is also accredited for up to 47.50 hours of nursing credits.

Pre-Conference Workshops:
Wilderness Survival "Come Back Alive"
will be held on May 29, 2019.
A dynamic hands-on survival training program designed to provide real skills and experience in a short time. Learn practical techniques and demo equipment to help you survive a wilderness survival emergency. This exciting workshop is lead by renowned expedition physician Howard Donner, MD and is conducted both in the classroom and outdoors at our local field site. Faculty: Howard Donner MD and Kyle Allred PA-C

Topics:
• Building micro-survival kits
• Protective gear and technology
• Building fires
• Safe travel/signaling for rescue
• Emergency shelter building
• Improvisation skills

Map and Compass Navigation Essentials will be held on May 29, 2019.
Become confident in orienteering! Hands-on training in direction finding, detailed map reading, plotting routes, and calculating the slope of the terrain. Map and compass activities to improve accuracy when following a direction and navigating a planned route. Maps and compasses are provided. Faculty: Sheryl Olson, RN, BSN

Practical Wilderness Medicine Skills will be held on May 29, 2019.
This intensive and fast-paced workshop will include:
• Assessment tips for the wilderness medical provider
• Improvised evacuation / litter packaging
• Small group rescue techniques
• Field management of spine injuries
Improvised splinting, and much more
Includes critiqued skills, scenario practice, and all equipment. Faculty: Carl Gilmore, WEMT

Advanced Wilderness & Expedition Provider (AWEP) Certification Course will be held from May 30 - Jun 02, 2019.
Advanced level intensive and hands-on training taught by leaders in Wilderness Medicine including, Howard J. Donner, MD, Eric Weiss, MD, FACEP, and Sheryl Olson, RN/BSN.

Students will learn practical techniques and practice them in mock scenarios. Successful completion, of course, leads to AWEP Certification™ and 15.5 additional AMA PRA Category 1 Credits™

Optional Pre-Conference:
Global Health / Humanitarian Medicine Symposium will be held on May 29, 2019.
Theme: Humanitarian Response To The Global Population Crisis
This optional workshop is accredited for 8.0 additional AMA PRA Category 1 Credits™. 

Conference Objectives are:
• Identify prevention and treatment of altitude illness based on an understanding of the underlying physiology
• Recognize and properly manage frostbite in the field
• Identify and treat hypothermia in the field
• Identify fracture and dislocation in the wilderness
• Identify the pathophysiology and treatment of heat-related illness
