Learning Objectives:
Upon completion of this activity, participants will be able to:
• Apply improved strategies in the outpatient care of the most common conditions: hypertension, diabetes, and hypercholesterolism
• Assess the clinical value of specific diagnostic tests used in general internal medicine and specialty practices, including test sensitivity, specificity, and predictive values
• Identify the disease-prevention and health-promotion goals of general internal medicine
• Recognize the side effects and interactions among medications prescribed by general internists and specialty physicians
• Develop a working understanding of the impact of biomodulators and on concurrent medical conditions and patient medications
• Discuss the expected results of therapies and summarize the current treatment strategies for common conditions in medical and nonmedical specialties, including cardiovascular, pulmonary, neurologic/neurovascular, endocrine, ophthalmic, orthopedic, immunologic, reproductive, dermatologic, gastrointestinal, hepatic, geriatric, psychiatric, metabolic, and sleep medicine
• Describe clinical strategies for optimal pain management, including opioid management and buprenorphine treatment
• Apply evidence-based palliative care strategies in clinical practice
• Develop new and innovative skills in clinical problem-solving strategies to achieve the best outcomes for the most challenging patients
• Understand the implications of MACRA for clinical practice and quality of care
• Appreciate and understand the potential patient harm from the unregulated supplement industry
• Design new strategies for patient interaction and shared decision-making in order to bring satisfaction to daily practice
