Nantz National Alzheimer Center 7th Annual Symposium is organized by Houston Methodist Institute for Academic Medicine and will be held on Feb 16, 2018 at Houston Methodist Research Institute, Houston, Texas, United States of America.
The target audience for this medical event is Physicians, scientists with an interest in neurobiology, neuropsychologists, speech pathologists, physician assistants, nurse practitioners, nurses, physical therapists, occupational therapists, social workers, residents and fellows will benefi t from this course. This CME Conference has been approved with a maximum of 6.00 AMA PRA Category 1 Credits.
course Description :
This conference will examine the current knowledge on the role of prions in neurodegenerative diseases. Discovered by Dr. Stanley Prusiner, prions are proteins that misfold, self-propagate, and spread throughout the brain causing neurodegeneration. Dr. Prusiner won the 1997 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine, as well as the 2009 National Medal of Science, for this work. Mounting evidence argues that the prion mechanism features in several neurodegenerative diseases, including Alzheimer’s disease. Understanding this neurobiology is critical for the development of effective therapies.
Conference Objectives are :
Many physicians who treat patients with Alzheimer’s disease and other neurodegenerative disorders are not aware that mounting evidence argues that beta-amyloid and tau become prions. A number of therapeutic trials target these misfolded proteins. Developing new therapeutics against beta-amyloid and tau prions will prove effi cacious in the future.
