The U.S. just recently passed a grim milestone, over 100,000 coronavirus patients have died. With the country nearing 2 million confirmed cases, experts predict that the death rates will continue to surge. Many countries around the world are in a similar predicament, as they are also seeing an increase in cases and deaths, due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Fortunately, even as the number of global coronavirus cases continues to grow, some countries have managed to successfully control and combat COVID-19.

One such country that has nearly eliminated the virus from its territory, while being praised for how they handled their economy and pandemic restrictions, is New Zealand. Much of New Zealand’s success against the novel coronavirus has been attributed to its Prime Minister, Jacinda Ardern. In mid-March, even with only 6 confirmed cases of COVID-19 at the time, Ardern ordered anyone entering the country, to be quarantined. By March 19th Ardern shut down all travel into the country and essentially exiled itself from the travel industry. “Our Prime Minister made the decision that she did not want what was happening in Italy, to happen to New Zealand”, said Siouxsie Wiles, an associate professor of microbiology in New Zealand. As of this writing, many public areas and businesses have started to reopen in New Zealand. With around 1,500 confirmed coronavirus cases and less than 24 deaths, many countries around the world, are looking to New Zealand as a model for procedures and restrictions, to help stop the spread of not just COVID-19, but any other future diseases.

Other areas that have seen miraculously low numbers of the coronavirus, are Taiwan, Vietnam, and Hong Kong. Taiwan and Vietnam are in similar circumstances, with both only seeing one new coronavirus case within the last three weeks, while Hong Kong has seen an average of one new case per day. Costa Rica and Iceland have also brought their COVID-19 cases down to extremely low numbers, along with many nations residing in the Caribbean.

Some of the world’s largest countries have been questioned for their lack of planning and execution, in response to the coronavirus pandemic. These countries include the U.S., Brazil, Italy, and Spain. The U.S. has been especially criticized for their lack of supplies, testing kits, and response time. All of the countries mentioned above, have started to reopen their economy, much to the disdain of disease and health experts, such as Dr. Anthony Fauci, who have gone on to claim, that lifting stay-at-home orders too early could cause permanent damage, and result in an unprecedented number of fatalities.
