4 Great States for Summer CME Conferences
July 23, 2015 by Dr. Michael Ament

Summer is a great time of year to attend a medical conference. While sitting inside a hotel or convention center may not seem ideal in July, August and September, the nice weather and long days will allow you to make the most of your downtime after sessions have wrapped up. So treat yourself to a destination conference and travel someplace fun for your summer CME!

The four states featured below offer not only a variety of medical conferences, but a variety of attractions and activities to enjoy as well. And so whether you will be traveling solo or with your family in tow, you will no doubt find a way to fill up free time or add on to your trip at the end of an event. Before choosing your next spot for summer CME, get an overview of what each of the states below has to offer:

Within the "Sunshine State", there are multiple destination cities that are also medical conference "hot spots". Orlando, FL is just one example of a host city with outdoor entertainment options like Walt Disney World, Universal Studios and of course, beaches. Fort Lauderdale is another popular city, offering conference-goers and their families activities like biking, snorkeling, surfing and more. Other major cities to consider attending a conference in, include Miami and Tampa.

And for physicians who are interested in a more exotic getaway, Florida is the starting point for several conference cruises such as the Pediatric Eastern Caribbean Cruise 2015.

While Florida may be the "Sunshine State" , did you know that Arizona is home to the "City of Sunshine"? Tucson offers several ways to enjoy the summer sunshine after a long day of medical conference sessions. Explore the local landscape by hiking through Saguaro National, Tucson Mountain or Catalina State Park. Or perhaps you’d rather cap off your day with a tour of Scottsdale, via Segway, kayak or horseback?

Phoenix, AZ has been touted by many as a top conference and family destination in the United States. A convention-friendly city, this growing metropolitan offers high-quality meeting facilities as well as attractions that encompass music, nature, wildlife, art, dining and more.

California offers a large amount of medical conferences and attractions to choose from, making this state the perfect place to earn some summertime CME! In addition to exploring neurological disorders and advances in clinical research, take a tour of the Golden Gate Bridge and Alcatraz Island near San Francisco, Balboa Park in San Diego, or Universal Studios Hollywood in Los Angeles.

Looking for a way to stretch your legs after a long day of sitting? Regroup with some swimming or surfing at the beach, take a family hike through a forest of redwoods, or go on a bicycle ride throughout the city. The options are endless!

They say that everything is bigger is Texas, and when it comes to medical conference selection and popular attractions, that just might be the truth. Home to major conference cities like Austin, Dallas, Houston and San Antonio, physicians are sure to meet both their CME and summer vacationing needs all at once.

Nurture your passion for outdoor concerts by checking the lineup in Austin (aka the Live Music Capital of the World), take a walking tour for "foodies" in Dallas, catch a baseball game at Minute Maid Park in Houston, or get wet and wild at the notable Schlitterbahn Waterpark near San Antonio.

If you are planning to attend a medical conference this summer, look into one of the above states as your destination for both quality education and recreation.
